Vienna City Guide

Public Transportation The public transport network in Vienna is excellent and an efficient alternative to avoid the time-consuming annoyance of driving in crowded streets and finding parking spaces. The U- Bahn (inner-city underground), trams and busses are co-ordinated by the “Wiener Linien” (Vienna Transport Authority), website www.wienerlinien.at (English version available). Services operate from approximately 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. There are several night lines that operate during the night hours with departure times approximately two times an hour. Tickets Tickets can be bought at the automatic vending machines, located at each station, at any Wiener Linien-Counter, at kiosks, online via the www.wienerlinien.at website, via the Wiener Linien App for mobiles, or in the means of transport. Please note that tickets bought in advance must be punched in a blue ticket cancelling machine in the tram or bus or at the barrier before you board the underground train. Tickets must be purchased before starting the journey or immediately after boarding the means of transport. If caught without a valid ticket, fines have to be paid. Single adult tickets for the peak time cost approx. € 2.10 when bought in advance and approx. € 2.20 when bought in the means of transport. The ticket for a single trip can be used for any single trip within Vienna. It is allowed to change lines, but not to interrupt the journey. Children under age of six travel free on Vienna’s public transport network. Children under the age of fifteen travel free on Sundays, public holidays and during Vienna school holidays. 24-hour / 48-hour / 72-hour passes (“24-hour / 48-hour / 72-hour Wien-Karte”) cost approx. € 7.10 / € 12.40 / € 15.40 and are valid throughout Vienna for exactly 24 / 48 / 72 hours from the time the tickets are punched. The 8-day Climate Ticket costs approx. € 35.80 and is valid for any eight days (not necessarily eight consecutive days). It may also be used for several people travelling together, in which case one ticket strip for each person in the group needs to be punched. Weekly passes (“Wochenkarte”, approx. € 15.80) and monthly passes (“Monatskarte”, approx. € 47) are available and are transferable to somebody else. The Vienna Card (“Wien-Karte”) can be purchased at Wiener Linien-Counters or in hotels for approx. € 19.90 and offers a 72-hour pass for the underground, trams and buses plus additional discounts and benefits at various sights, museums and restaurants. Vienna Ring Tram The yellow Vienna Ring Tram takes visitors around the Ring presenting the major sights in various languages. The tram operates from 10:00 a.m. to 5:20 p.m. daily, and the round trip takes ca. 24 minutes. All tickets can be purchased from Wiener Linien. Regular Wiener Linien tickets are not valid on the Vienna Ring Tram. A round trip ring tour ticket costs € 7, a 24-hours ticket costs € 9 and in combination with a 24-hour Wiener Linien ticket the costs are € 14. More information can be obtained at one of the Wiener Linien information offices throughout the city, e.g. at Stephansplatz or Karlsplatz. Further locations can be found via www.wienerlinien.at.
