Education Kindergarten
Most children in Germany go to a kindergarten between the ages of three and six, although it is not compulsory. The law guarantees a place for every child, however finding vacancies in a kindergarten can be difficult. Therefore flexibility may be required when choosing a kindergarten. It may not be possible to send one’s child to the nearest kindergarten. Children can usually attend half-day or all day. Schooling Children who have reached the age of six are required to attend school, e.g. a German primary school ( Grundschule ) . They may only be enrolled in the district in which the parents have their place of residence except children who will attend a private or international school. Children attend primary school from the ages 6 to 10, or as old as 12. Primary school lasts four years, and in some states six years. After primary school, children can attend different types of secondary schools: + Classes five to nine ( Hauptschule ) + Classes five or six to 10 ( Realschule ) + Classes four or five to 12 or 13 ( Gymnasium ) + All types of secondary schools in one building ( Gesamtschule ) In the Gesamtschule the type of school can be changed during the educational period. Usually, children attending the Hauptschule or Realschule continue after their education is completed with an apprenticeship. The widest range of possibilities is given with the attendance of a Gymnasium as the child can choose between going to university or an apprenticeship. However, the academic standards for the Gymnasium are very high. Childcare The most popular childcare options for full-time working parents are au pairs, all-day babysitters and in-home care providers. Countrywide there is a private organization that works with employers in helping their employees to find childcare: www.familienservice.de .
