If the person is a non-EU citizen, it is mandatory to obtain the residence permit before the application will be accepted. o Child allowance payments will be backdated to the date of your first registration + Can I apply for Child Allowance if my spouse and children live in another country? Yes, it is possible within the EU, provided all supportive documentation, including necessary certificates issued by the country of the family’s residence, are in place. If this is the case, child allowance is paid twice per year – in June and in December. Child allowancecannot be paid if the family remains in a non-EU country. + Can I apply for Child Allowance if my spouse and children live in another country and receive child benefits there? – Yes, it is possible, however you will be only paid the difference between the Luxembourgish child allowance and that of the country of family’s residence. + Can I apply for Child Allowance if both my spouse and I have not obtained our residence permits yet? – No, if you are non-EU citizen, it is mandatory to be in possession of a valid residence permit before child allowance is granted. + What are the challenges in applying for child allowance? o It is important to file and submit the application as soon as possible because it triggers the right for Cheque Service. o CAE reserves the right to request more documents than mentioned above.
