Car Registration General information If you bring a car from your home country to your new permanent residence in Austria, please be aware that your car has to be registered in Austria within one month. New and used imported cars are treated differently regarding taxes and registration. The Austrian government differentiates between new and used cars in the following manner: + A new car has a mileage of less than 6000 kilometers or has been registered for less than six months in the former country of residence + A used car has a mileage of more than 6000 kilometers and has been registered for more than six months in the former country of residence. Import from an EU Country A car imported from an EU country will need to have a license plate and a valid insurance. It is possible to obtain a temporary license plate for the transfer of the car (“Überstellungskennzeichen”) in the EU home country or to keep the regular foreign license plate. Once in Austria, the data of cars with an “EU-Betriebserlaubnis” (EU-Permit) first need to be entered into the approval database (by the car manufacturer’s general importer or the local technical inspection authority) for the typification. For cars without an EU-Permit a single vehicle approval (“Einzelgenehmigung”) needs to be obtained at the local technical inspection authority.
