San Mateo was incorporated in 1894. Many singles consider San Mateo an excellent place to live since there are opportunities for real estate purchases and because rent is a little lower than areas on the Peninsula. By car, San Mateo is about twenty-five minutes from downtown San Francisco and thirty minutes from downtown San Jose. Housing San Mateo is dotted with homes ranging from single-story ranches, to Spanish Mission inspired homes, to more traditional and contemporary colonial houses. San Mateo also has an abundance of condominium and apartment properties available for purchase or rent.
