MOVING TO IRELAND – FAQ
BEFORE I ARRIVE Is there anything I can do to be prepared?
Documents – ensure you organise/translate to bring or can access: Passport, original work permit (if applicable), previous landlord reference, bank statements, employers letter confirming employment in Ireland and your start date, marriage and birth certificates if travelling with children. Register for a MyGov ID – this takes only minutes and is used as part of the process for registering for a PPS number in Ireland (like a social security number). To register for your MyGov ID you just need an email address and to create a password. Mobile Phone – it is a good idea to get your phone handset unlocked, allowing it to take other SIM cards. Unlocking your phone with your local provider before you depart should be easier than trying to get this done after you arrive in Ireland.
AFTER I ARRIVE What should I do first?
1. PPSN - The first step is to apply for your Personal Public Services Number (PPSN). It is important to get this number arranged as soon as possible after your arrival as it is used for tax purposes in Ireland. This takes place after your arrival as you need to have an Irish address to apply – the documentation is posted out to this address when the application is complete. It is a simple process to apply and your Dwellworks consultant will guide you. 2. Bank account – it is important to set up a local bank account so you can receive your salary. It is also convenient to have a local account for when you are ready to sign up for the utilities associated with your new home in Ireland. Your Dwellworks consultant will guide you about banking options in Ireland and work with you to get this set up as soon as possible. 3. IRP - If you are from a non-EU country you may require to register for an Irish Residence Permit (IRP). Should this be the case your Dwellworks consultant will book this appointment for you and advise you on how to be prepared. The appointment will take place after your arrival to Ireland, usually within 90 days of your arrival. When will my home finding start? In most instances it is a good idea to start discussing your home finding requirements prior to your arrival to Ireland. On the initial call with your Dwellworks consultant they will ask you about your preferences in terms of location, budget etc. Your feedback will allow the consultant to give their experienced advice on what is the best timeline for your home finding process. What about driving in Ireland – what are the licence requirements? Everyone who drives in Ireland must hold a driving licence and valid insurance. Visitors to Ireland can drive with a driving licence from any state outside the EU/EEA for up to 1 year provided the driving licence is current and valid. If you have a driving licence issued by an EU/EEA member state, you can drive in Ireland if your existing licence is valid. Should you not hold any licence you cannot drive in Ireland. If you wish to learn to drive in Ireland OR if you hold a licence but want to know more about what happens after the initial 1-year period of driving on your existing licence, your Dwellworks consultant can give you more information on these points.
