CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR INTERNSHIP WITH ADOBE! We are so excited you will be joining us soon. The Bay Area is an amazing and diverse community with tons of activities to do and places to see. There are so many perks to living in the heart of Silicon Valley – access to new people, culture, food and technology but with that comes the challenge of finding affordable housing. Rental home and apartment prices tend to be high in the Bay Area, so we recommend finding a roommate/housemate to split the cost of housing and utilities. Figure out where you want to live and get started on the search as early as you can. We have compiled some information together for you to help get you oriented with your internship location. We wish you luck in your housing search! WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT RENTING IN SAN JOSE San Jose is currently one of the most competitive housing markets in the country, and the lower end of the rental market is the most competitive. As you can imagine, many renters are looking to save as much money as possible on monthly housing costs, so when a quality studio or one-bedroom apartment pops up for rent, competition can be fierce! These units will likely not be remodeled but will be in good condition and well-maintained with a reserved, off-street parking space included, and maybe a small patio or balcony. They will often rent within a day or two of being listed.

EXPLORE
DOWNTOWN – HENSLEYDISTRICT (N. 2NDSTREET AT JULIANSTREET) Very walkable, easy access to bus lines and VTA tram line, shops and restaurants. Good proximity to San Pedro Square and Japantown. Good nightlife for young professionals. The SAP Center, home of the San Jose Sharks hockey team, as well as many concerts and events are located here. Downtown San Jose also has many museums, a theater and convention center, making the area desirable for active young professionals. A soccer stadium hosting the San Jose Earthquakes is also nearby. Good proximity to groceries: Trader Joes, Target, Costco and more. Access to Diridon Station for train lines to San Francisco, the East Bay and Central Valley connections. JAPANTOWN (JACKSON STREET AT 6TH STREET) & NORTHSIDE Bordering Downtown San Jose, the above mentioned details also apply to Japantown with the added bonus of a fantastic cultural area featuring Japanese markets and many wonderful restaurants such as a local favorite, Minato Japanese Restaurant . A seasonal farmers market is held here as well. Many new apartment communities have been built in the last few years with amenities appealing to young professionals. “Northside” borders Japantown and Downtown San Jose on the north side of E. Santa Clara Street. This is a mostly suburban area with single family homes, duplexes and some apartment communities. This area is a little farther away from Downtown, parts of this neighborhood would be considered walkable to Japantown, but not to San Pedro Square. Avoid living close to parks in this neighborhood due to the homeless encampments. WILLOW GLEN Located just outside of Downtown, Willow Glen is a desirable San Jose suburb. The area features a lovely town center with shops, restaurants and parks. This is a very family and pet friendly area with many residents out for a walk in the evening. While Willow Glen does not have the same nightlife feel as Downtown San Jose, some young professionals choose this area because of the availability of budget friendly apartments. The Lincoln Avenue area has been a favorite for many young professionals due to the abundance of bus stops and excellent nearby amenities. THE ALAMEDA Bordering Downtown San Jose and the Rose Garden neighborhood, The Alameda is an up-and-coming hot spot for young professionals. This area features newer, upscale, pet-friendly loft apartment communities. Very walkable with excellent proximity to a new Whole Foods market, cafes, restaurants as well as quick access to Coleman Shopping Center, with Trader Joes, Target, Marshall’s PetSmart, BJ’s Brewery , Panera Bread and more. SUNNYVALE Visitors and residents enjoy Sunnyvale’s beautiful, clean suburban setting, efficient, high-quality city services, low crime rate, quality schools and 18 prize- winning parks. Residents can drive or take public transportation within an hour to many recreational facilities.

SETTLE LEASING TIPS - In a competitive rental market, bring a completed rental application - including all necessary documentation - and a check for security deposit when visiting the property - Ask if the landlord offers any favorable terms for your employer - Come prepared with enough funds to pay for the first month of rent, plus the deposit amount. Deposit requirements vary, but can be equal to one-month rent (or more) - Be extra diligent when reviewing the lease from a private landlord. Unlike large apartment complexes, which generally have well established agreements, private landlords may be less experienced and may include unfavorable or unrealistic clauses - Ask a family member, friend, or colleague to come along with you on the move-in inspection to have an extra set of eyes

TRANSPORTATION Downtown San Jose is a very walkable area, but if you don't want to walk, the light rail runs right through the city with several stops throughout the area. Rated the safest metropolitan city in the US, travelling by foot in the evening is generally very safe. The city of San Jose offers an array of public transportation options to assist with daily commutes. A comprehensive network of buses, trains, and various taxi services make commuting throughout the city and its neighborhoods an easy task. The San Jose Department of Transportation offers both local and regional commuting options. Trains The Caltrain rail services links San Jose and San Francisco, with stops at Gilroy, various Peninsula cities, and the San Francisco International Airport. GoPass annual transit passes provide unlimited, free rides on Caltrain. For locals desiring to commute to Stockton, the Altamont Corridor Express (ACE), links the city with San Jose, while the Capitol Corridor serves the San Jose and Sacramento areas. Buses The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) offers a vast bussing network connecting San Jose with dozens of other cities throughout the region. The VTA Trip planner tool will connect riders with bus ETAs, schedules, delays, and various updates. Commute Alternatives The Commuter Alternatives Program helps you find inexpensive, stress-free and environmentally friendly ways to get to work. Some examples are listed below and may vary by your office location. - Up to $150 per month Commuter Checks for vanpools and transit systems. HOSPITALS AND EMERGENCY SERVICES Numerous hospitals and emergency care centers serve San Jose and its surrounding suburbs. From large, public clinics, to smaller establishments, care is never out of reach in San Jose. These medical centers include: - Good Samaritan Hospital - Regional Medical Center - O’Connor Hospital - El Camino Hospital Urgent Care Facilities For urgent, but not life-threatening, medical concerns that occur after-hours, or cannot wait for an appointment with a regular physician, urgent care centers can be found throughout the area: - Action Urgent Care Many urgent care centers are open from the early morning until late in the evening during the week and maintain weekend and holiday hours. Just as with a visit to the doctor, an urgent care center will always need your insurance information. Although the staff will file a claim to receive payment from your health insurance provider, a co-pay may apply at the time of treatment.
SHOPPING Shopping in the Bay Area offers a fantastic overall experience, even if you are not buying anything. These malls and shopping centers are just some of what the Bay Area has to offer.

An open-air, multi-use center featuring upscale shopping, dining, lodging, and entertainment. Its unique experience is reminiscent of Las Vegas. The main boulevard of Santana Row features store fronts styled in an elegant, European facade.

Valley Fair, and the adjacent Santana Row, combine to be the focal point of San Jose shopping. Valley Fair is one of the largest and busiest indoor malls in the state. With over 225 stores to choose from, you will be able to find a store to meet almost any buying need.

If you’re looking for a night out, www.sanjose.org/things-to-do/nightlife has options for just about anything you can think of. If food is what you’re after, head over to San Pedro Square Market where gourmet stalls abound. Grab a sushi roll or a buffalo burger, sit outside at one of the many picnic tables, and listen to some live music. Before you go anywhere you should try the Pho at Dakao . It’s as authentic as it gets, seeing as San Jose has the largest Vietnamese population outside of Vietnam. Or try Back A Yard Caribbean Grill for some amazing jerk chicken. You can also get the “Cereal Killer,” a fruity cereal-topped doughnut drizzled with icing at Psycho Donuts.
