DRIVER’S LICENSE AND REGISTRATION Fees

A New Jersey Driver’s license costs $10 for a temporary driver permit and then an additional $24 for the full, four-year license. For expatriates, the fee will be prorated based on license expiration date. Licenses expire the same date as visa and I-94. Accepted forms of payment vary dependent upon which office location is visited by the applicant. Eligibility & Residency Conditions Upon becoming a resident of New Jersey, those who wish to drive in the state apply for a driver’s license within 60 days of your move or before your current license expires, whichever occurs first. Residency is established when an individual moves into a home within the state’s borders. All applicants must complete the state’s 6 Point ID Verification Program by presenting documents that prove age, identity and legal presence in the U.S: A primary and secondary document from the list below is required: • Passport with visa and I-94 (primary document) • Social security card (secondary document and provides SSN) • Bank statement issued in the past 60 days with applicant’s name and address (proof of address); electronic printouts are not accepted • Utility or credit card bill; electronic printouts are not accepted

• Original lease; electronic printouts are not accepted • First class mail received from any federal agency

Preparation It is strongly recommended that the New Jersey Driver Handbook is studied prior to taking the written test. This is can be viewed in PDF format at www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/license/drivermanual.pdf . There are also practice tests available online for study purposes.
