Geographic Overview Regions Germany has 16 federal states that retain a measure of sovereignty to create their own laws, taxes, etc. Most states were divided based on geographical or cultural regions. The five most visited states are Bavaria ( Bayern ), Baden- Wurttemberg, North Rhine- Westphalia ( Nordrhein-Westfalen ), Lower Saxony ( Niedersachsen ), and Hesse ( Hessen ). Within these five states, there is a wide variety of cultures and sights to see.
Major Cities The five largest cities in Germany are Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt. + Berlin: As Germany’s capital, it holds a population of 3,375 million people. Berlin is known for its art scene, nightlife, and history + Hamburg: This major port city in northern Germany is connected to the North Sea by Elbe River. With just over 1,734 million people, it is Germany’s second largest city + Munich: Known for the annual Oktoberfest celebrations, Munich is filled with history from century-old buildings to historic museums + Cologne: As the fourth largest city in Germany, Cologne sits on both sides of the Rhine River, just 80 short kilometers from Belgium + Frankfurt: Frankfurt is a central Germany city sitting on Main River.
