Pets Requirements and Registration

Cats and dogs can be imported to Australia under strict conditions designed by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources to ensure that Australia remains free of diseases. These conditions differ depending on which country you are moving from. Cats and dogs which are imported to Australia need an official import permit. This permit may be waived if the pets are from New Zealand and Norfolk Island. Except for New Zealand and Norfolk Island, in all other cases, an official import permit is required. Pet owners will need to fill in an online import permit application form and pay an application fee. The import documentation can take significant time to complete, normally up to two months. The average application processing time is 20 days. All pets relocating to Australia must be microchipped and must undergo a Rabies Antibody Titer Test at least three to four weeks after receiving an inactivated rabies vaccination. In case the cats and dogs are healthy and tick free, the quarantine period is ten days. You will also need to pay for your pet’s accommodation in one of the two quarantine facilities that the Department of Agriculture runs in Sydney and Melbourne. It is advisable to book as soon as the import permit is received as places can be limited. Certain pets and countries of origin may require a different travel plan or prevent you from moving your pet to Australia. The following dog breeds are not permitted to enter Australia: Dogo Argentino, Fila Brazileiro, Japanese Tosa, Pit Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull, Perro de Presa Canario or Presa Canario. Pet Transport Pets must travel in International Air Transport Association (IATA) approved air kennels. Visit the IATA website for more information. Airlines should be contacted well in advance to inquire about regulations for transportation of animals. The travel documents for pets are issued by vets. The rules and regulations are complex, and we recommend that you enlist the services of a licensed pet transport agent to assist you in making the arrangements to take your pet into Australia.
