The National exams are the principal means of assessment for 16-year old’s and are the main examinations for students before deciding their next steps onto higher education, much like a high school diploma it marks the end of compulsory education in Scotland. Many pupils remain at school after the minimum leaving age of 16, opting to study levels S6 and take their Higher exams. The Higher exams determine eligibility to enter University for those that wish to take that route.
