CANCELLATION OF CONTRACTS FOR (MOBILE) PHONES AND INTERNET
LANDLINE, MOBILE PHONES AND INTERNET:
FURTHER INFORMATION
TO DO
Provide DSC with contract details and client numbers for all contracts asap.
Most internet / phone / mobile phone contracts with a reasonable high-speed connection will have a minimum duration of 1-3 years with an automatic (2-)yearly renewal. It may not be possible to terminate these contracts without payment for the remaining contract duration. The earliest termination date that might be accepted as an exception is 3 months after deregistration document is provided to them. Therefore, you need to be prepared to make payments for at least 3 months after you have left Germany. Sending the termination letters early is always a good first step, but the cancellation period will not necessarily be started with that. It needs to align with the contract duration or will be triggered by supplying the de-registration confirmation. You may have more contracts and phone lines that you are aware of. You may have been offered multiple phone lines /fax service that you have not used but need to be cancelled as well. Providing the town hall deregistration document (Abmeldebestätigung) is essential to terminate a contract before its end date. It is best to act on the letters /emails from the phone company as quickly as possible since delays tend to generate further costs. Even if there have already been delays, the matter needs to be resolved. It will not go away by itself. It will only get worse with time (up to claims from lawyers and debt collecting agencies). If you have not received a confirmation of the cancellation date within 3 weeks, please let us know as something may have gone wrong. If there are any deductions from your bank account from a contract that you already thought closed, action will need to be taken.
Send termination letters with registered mail and keep a copy of the letter and the receipt. Check that all lines are cancelled, even lines that you may not have used. Provide the DSC with a copy of your town hall deregistration document. Forward any communication you receive from the phone company to your Dwellworks DSC. Notify DSC if cancellation is not confirmed.
Check your bank account for deductions.
IN ADDITION FOR MOBILE PHONES AND INTERNET:
Check if all contracts have been cancelled.
The contracts for the mobile phones of the family members and tablets for kids may need to be cancelled individually.
It may not be possible to terminate the contract on the basis of the move since some phone companies offer services internationally and therefore the contract may need to continue until the end of minimum contract duration.
IN ADDITION FOR INTERNET:
Return hardware complete and timely and keep receipt.
Incomplete or delayed return of hardware item (however out-of-date they may seem) will result in additional costs.
Supply proof of new residence.
In order to terminate a contract before the end of the minimum duration it may be required to supply proof of having moved to a place where the current provided does not offer services, in the form of a town hall registration, property tax or electricity invoice.
Please note that this list is only general information. Depending on your individual situation there may be further/ different steps which need to be taken.
