City Profile Berlin is characterised by its diversity of ethnic backgrounds, cultures, mentalities and lifestyles. The city is currently experiencing fundamental changes and modernisation on all levels. The relocation of Germany's government to Berlin in 1999 was more than simply a move to a different city. As Germany's new capital, Berlin gives the nation's federal structure a distinct new quality. Berlin is a modern cosmopolitan centre for the new German States. Profiting from an international urban atmosphere, new realms of activity are opening up for government, industry and business. Major German corporations and leading industrial associations are in the process of relocating their headquarters to the country's focus of political decision making. The city's population is 3.5 million inhabitants and has a total of 5 million people in the Berlin metropolitan area. The city itself covers an area of 343 square miles with a wide variety of different districts and neighbourhoods, each with its own special personality. Berlin is home to people from all over Germany and from 180 different nations. The size of the city lends itself to virtually unlimited contact opportunities: from politics and business to media, science, culture and sports. At the same time, there is also a wealth of opportunities in the form of conferences, exhibitions and conventions. Currently, 400 trade shows and congresses take place in Berlin every year. These include the IFA World of Consumer Electronics and the International Tourism Exchange.
